Device Manager Code 43 on a GPU: Driver and Display Checks

A GPU with Code 43 was stopped by Windows after reporting a problem. The code cannot by itself separate a driver issue from a card or platform fault.

Protect your files first

Back up important files when possible. If the drive is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key before recovery changes. Stop if storage appears to be failing or this is a work or school managed PC.

What to record

Exact GPU model, Windows build, driver version, recent update, and whether an external display works.

The exact message, Windows version, and whether the desktop still opens matter more than a guess based on the symptom name.

Try these safer checks

Use the exact PC or GPU maker’s official driver and diagnostics. If the problem began immediately after a driver update and rollback is available, record both versions and test once.

Change one thing at a time. After each check, see whether the same symptom returns and write down what changed.

When to stop and get help

Stop if the GPU overheats or the PC shuts down under load; avoid third-party driver bundles.

If this is a work or school device, contact its administrator before changing managed settings.

Keep track of your checks

This checklist stays in this browser session. It is not sent to WinErrors.
