On Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, a stop error may use a black screen. A visible stop code means this is an unexpected-restart problem, not the same as an empty black display.
Protect your files first
Back up important files when possible. If the drive is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key before recovery changes. Stop if storage appears to be failing or this is a work or school managed PC.
What to record
Photograph or copy the stop code and any driver file, plus the Windows version and repeat pattern.
The exact message, Windows version, and whether the desktop still opens matter more than a guess based on the symptom name.
Try these safer checks
Search the exact stop code, check whether Windows reaches the desktop, and review recent hardware or driver changes. Start with Microsoft’s basic stop-error checks.
Change one thing at a time. After each check, see whether the same symptom returns and write down what changed.
When to stop and get help
If the PC cannot boot or the drive is unstable, move to a file-preserving recovery decision before changing boot settings.
If this is a work or school device, contact its administrator before changing managed settings.
Keep track of your checks
