Black Screen With Cursor in Windows: What to Check

A blank black display with a pointer is different from a black stop-error screen that names a code. First confirm whether the PC reached sign-in and whether a cursor is visible.

Protect your files first

Back up important files when possible. If the drive is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key before recovery changes. Stop if storage appears to be failing or this is a work or school managed PC.

What to record

Whether the manufacturer logo appears, cursor visibility, external monitor behavior, and the last successful sign-in.

The exact message, Windows version, and whether the desktop still opens matter more than a guess based on the symptom name.

Try these safer checks

Check display connections and the selected monitor input. If Windows sign-in appears on another display, record the display configuration. If recovery is needed, use the Microsoft Windows RE path.

Change one thing at a time. After each check, see whether the same symptom returns and write down what changed.

When to stop and get help

Do not reset or reinstall Windows solely because the display is black; protect unsaved and unbacked-up data first.

If this is a work or school device, contact its administrator before changing managed settings.

Keep track of your checks

This checklist stays in this browser session. It is not sent to WinErrors.
