Run DISM and SFC: What Each Command Checks

DISM checks or repairs the Windows component image; SFC checks protected system files. They are useful for some corruption symptoms, not every hardware or driver fault.

Protect your files first

Back up important files when possible. If the drive is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key before recovery changes. Stop if storage appears to be failing or this is a work or school managed PC.

When this guide applies

DISM checks or repairs the Windows component image; SFC checks protected system files. They are useful for some corruption symptoms, not every hardware or driver fault.

Check the exact Windows version and whether the PC is managed by a workplace or school before following instructions.

Steps

Back up files and open an elevated Command Prompt in a booted Windows session. Microsoft’s sequence is DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow. Read each result before repeating or escalating.

Record the result of the step before deciding whether to continue. A failed step is diagnostic evidence; it does not automatically justify a reset or reinstall.

Copy the commands

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Run each command only in an elevated Command Prompt in a booted Windows session. This does not apply as written to an offline installation.

Limits and stop points

Do not run the /Online command against an offline Windows installation in WinRE. An unstable drive calls for data protection first.

If the result does not match the guide, use the official reference below or contact the device maker with the exact error and steps already attempted.

Keep track of your checks

This checklist stays in this browser session. It is not sent to WinErrors.
