What Is a Windows Bug Check?

A bug check is a kernel stop event identified by a numeric code and parameters. The code narrows the error family but often needs a dump and context to identify the cause.

Protect your files first

Back up important files when possible. If the drive is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key before recovery changes. Stop if storage appears to be failing or this is a work or school managed PC.

Meaning

A bug check is a kernel stop event identified by a numeric code and parameters. The code narrows the error family but often needs a dump and context to identify the cause.

How to use this information

An Event 41 BugcheckCode field may show the value in decimal. Convert only that field, not an arbitrary Event ID.

Use the exact code together with the screen, Windows release, and recent changes. A definition does not diagnose your particular PC.

Keep track of your checks

This checklist stays in this browser session. It is not sent to WinErrors.
