Device Manager Code 43: Check the Device, Not Just the Number

Code 43 means Windows stopped a device after the device reported a problem. It does not prove the hardware is permanently damaged.

Protect your files first

Back up important files when possible. If the drive is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key before recovery changes. Stop if storage appears to be failing or this is a work or school managed PC.

Evidence that helps

Record the exact device name and Device status text. Try a safe connection check if it is external, compare the driver with the device maker’s official package, and use model-specific diagnostics if the problem persists.

Avoid a false diagnosis

A GPU, USB device, and network adapter need different next steps. Avoid driver bundles and do not disable security controls.

Check the exact Windows build and the screen where the error appeared before applying a repair.
