DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (0x9F): Sleep and Wake Checks

DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE means a driver did not finish a required power-state transition in time. It often appears around sleep, wake, or shutdown, but the stop code alone does not name the driver.

Protect your files first

Back up important files when possible. If the drive is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key before recovery changes. Stop if storage appears to be failing or this is a work or school managed PC.

What the code means

DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE means a driver did not finish a required power-state transition in time. It often appears around sleep, wake, or shutdown, but the stop code alone does not name the driver.

Evidence that helps

Record whether the crash happened entering sleep, waking, or shutting down. Note a newly connected device and the precise PC model. If Windows starts, check Device Manager and the OEM support page for the affected device; if it does not, use Safe Mode or Windows RE with a recovery-key check.

Avoid a false diagnosis

Do not uninstall a collection of drivers at random. A dump may help identify the blocked device stack.

Check the exact Windows build and the screen where the error appeared before applying a repair.

Keep track of your checks
